A movie shot in Cold Lake is making its way to the big screen in Lloydminster at May Cinema Six on Friday, Aug. 22.
Cree Nakoda Sioux comedian, Conway Kootenay, is giving movie-goers a second dose of his cinematography. He’s following up his first project, Guitar Lessons, with a new film called The Nation.
Filmed on the Cold Lake First Nation and other areas, the movie relates the saga of a First Nation Chief who leads a nation with casino and oil dollars. He then takes sovereignty to the next level by telling Canada to go “jump in the lake.”
Kootenay says the movie is shot like Steve Carell’s, The Office.
“It’s a First Nation’s version of The Office. It’s very funny. It’s hilarious. My character – I play Chief Chucky. He’s not the brightest chief, but he means well,” says the filmmaker, who is in high praise for the Cold Lake First Nation for their help and support in making the movie a reality.
Kootenay, who hails from Alexander First Nation in Alberta, says the acting bug bit him in 2014, while doing stunts on the movie The Revenant, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio.
He sees humour as part of the healing journey for First Nations People.
Kootenay’s new movie, The Nation, opens at May Cinema Six, Friday.
