As the leaves turn and Albertans prepare for colder months, the Alberta RCMP is reminding residents to take steps to protect their homes, seasonal properties, and valuables from fall-related property crime.
Alberta RCMP note that break and enters to seasonal properties were up 8 per cent last year. The off-season creates opportunities for thieves, especially when properties are left unattended.
Crime prevention tips for seasonal properties:
- Remove all valuables like tools, electronics, and firearms
- Secure all doors, windows, sheds, and gates
- Install motion sensor lights and timers on interior lights to give the illusion someone is home
- Trim shrubs and trees to maintain clear sightlines
- Visit your property regularly and clear snow to show signs of activity
- Install security cameras and alarms for remote monitoring
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to local police or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
