Celebrating inclusive workplaces during Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM), and communities across Canada—including right here in Lloydminster—are joining together to celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce.

DEAM is more than a campaign—it’s a movement that highlights the strength, diversity, and talent of individuals living with disabilities who are making meaningful impacts in local businesses and organizations. It’s also a time to reflect on the importance of building inclusive workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Growing Network of Inclusion

Lloydminster’s Bea Fisher Foundation is celebrating 63 inclusive employment partnerships—a testament to the community’s commitment to accessibility and opportunity.

Advocates see inclusive employment as being good for businesses and the community too, since by removing barriers, we can unlock potential.

How You Can Celebrate DEAM

  • Bea Fisher invites you to follow it’s social media as they spotlight disability-inclusive workplaces in the community
  • Light It Up on October 16: Decorate your home or business with purple or blue lights to show your support
  • Hire inclusively: If you own or manage a business, consider the benefits of hiring someone with a disability
  • Follow the conversation online using #DEAM2025 and share your stories of inclusive success
  • Foster a community spirit where everyone belongs and contributes

Background

DEAM began in the United States in 1988 and was adopted in Canada in 2010, with most provinces officially proclaiming it by 2011. Since then, it has grown into a national celebration of inclusive employment.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
