Battle of the Badges raises $8K, kilos of food for Lloydminster causes

The Todd Gustavson Battle of the Badges memorial hockey game brought an energetic crowd to the rink on Saturday, March 7, as first responders faced off in support of several Lloydminster organizations.

This year’s event at the new Cenovus Energy Hub generated $8,000 for Inclusion Lloydminster and Border City Connects. Spectators also contributed roughly 408 kilograms (900 pounds) of food, helping stock shelves at The Olive Tree and The Salvation Army to support community programs.

On the ice

In a historic first, the matchup between Lloydminster Fire Rescue and the RCMP went into overtime. The RCMP clinched a 4–3 victory, scoring with just 21 seconds remaining in three‑on‑three play to secure bragging rights for the coming year.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers praised both the action on the ice and the strong community turnout.

“It was great to see such a close game, especially with the first overtime finish in the history of Battle of the Badges,” Aalbers said. “Residents continue to show up in a big way to support organizations doing important work in Lloydminster. That support is what makes this event possible year after year.”

The annual game honours the late Todd Gustavson, former Lloydminster Fire Chief, who served the department for 37 years. His legacy continues through the event’s focus on collaboration and community impact.

The City of Lloydminster thanked everyone who attended, donated, and helped make this year’s Battle of the Badges a success.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
