Cenovus Energy is reporting strong financial and operational results in the first quarter of 2026, driven by record production, continued investment at Christina Lake, and ongoing output from Lloydminster‑area assets.
The company generated $3.4 billion in adjusted funds flow and $2.2 billion in free funds flow during the quarter. Total Upstream production reached a record 972,100 barrels of oil equivalent per day, while Downstream crude throughput averaged 458,500 barrels per day, representing an overall utilization rate of 97 per cent.
As part of its quarterly update, Cenovus announced a 10 per cent increase in its base dividend, raising it to $0.22 per share, payable beginning in the second quarter of 2026.
Shareholder returns
Cenovus returned $1.0 billion to shareholders during the first quarter through a combination of dividends, share buybacks, and preferred share redemptions. That included $379 million in common and preferred share dividends, $356 million in common share repurchases, and $300 million used to redeem preferred shares, leaving the company with no preferred shares remaining in its capital structure.
The quarterly base dividend is scheduled to be paid June 30, 2026, to shareholders of record as of June 15.
Lloydminster production update
In the Lloydminster region, Cenovus reported 102,300 barrels per day from its thermal assets, down slightly from the previous quarter due to the sale of the Vawn asset late last year. Lloydminster conventional heavy oil production rose to 29,000 barrels per day, up from 28,100 barrels per day in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Christina Lake expansion progressing
Production at Christina Lake increased to 358,900 barrels per day, supported by the acquisition of MEG Energy assets and strong well performance at Narrows Lake.
Cenovus also continued advancing the Christina Lake North expansion, where the first of 40 redevelopment wells was drilled in March, with first oil processed in April. The expansion is expected to add approximately 40,000 barrels per day by 2028, with production ramping up in the second half of 2026.
Broader performance
Net earnings for the quarter totalled $1.6 billion, up from $934 million in the previous quarter. Offshore production increased to 75,400 barrels of oil equivalent per day, while Downstream operations delivered a $734 million operating margin, supported by strong refinery utilization and favourable market conditions.
“Our people continued to deliver exceptional operating and financial results,” said Cenovus President and CEO Jon McKenzie, citing record production and disciplined execution across the company’s asset base.
Cenovus says it remains focused on safety, disciplined growth, and reducing long‑term debt as it advances major projects across Canada and offshore operations.
