Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre hosting National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration, June 21

Lloydminster residents are invited to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with a community event hosted by the Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre on Sunday, June 21.

The gathering will recognize Indigenous culture, heritage, and community spirit in a family atmosphere that includes kids zone, artisan vendors, door prizes and a free lunch and dinner.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated annually on June 21 — chosen to align with the summer solstice, which occurs this year at 2:24 a.m. CST. The day highlights the traditions, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples across Canada.

In Lloydminster, the Native Friendship Centre has traditionally marked the day through cultural programming, community gatherings, and opportunities for residents to learn more about Indigenous history and reconciliation efforts. Events like these aim to bring people together in the spirit of friendship and understanding, while showcasing local Indigenous culture.

Sunday’s program

Following lunch at noon, and the welcome at 1:00 p.m., powwow, and music band will follow. Dancers will take centre stage from 4;00 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5:00 p.m.

Across the country

National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated in communities across the country, with events ranging from ceremonies and traditional performances to educational workshops and community feasts, all aimed at recognizing the rich and diverse cultures of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

More information about this year’s celebration is available from the Lloydminster Native Friendship Centre.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
