Lloydminster council approves reserve funding for firefighter retroactive pay

Lloydminster City Council has approved using reserve funding to cover retroactive wage payments for members of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 5182, the union representing Lloydminster firefighters, following the ratification of new collective agreements.

Council committed $837,399.77 from the Fire Rescue Services Operating Reserve to fund retroactive pay covering the period from Jan. 1, 2022, to Dec. 31, 2024.

City documents indicate the cost of wage adjustments under the three-year agreement amounts to $1,029,289.96 for the period between Jan. 1, 2022, and June 8, 2026. Of that amount, $191,890.19 related to early 2026 retroactive payments will be absorbed through the city’s 2026 salaries and wages budget.

The agreement includes negotiated annual wage increases for firefighters of three per cent in 2022, three per cent in 2023, and 3.15 per cent in 2024. The retroactive payments associated with those increases total $72,279.69 for 2022, $159,993.24 for 2023 and $253,801.57 for 2024.

City documents also show $351,325.27 in retroactive pay tied to the 2025 wage adjustments covered under the agreement.

In addition to the three-year settlement, council approved a separate recommendation authorizing $143,000 from the Fire Rescue Services Operating Reserve to fund retroactive payments under a one-year collective agreement covering Jan. 1, 2025, to Dec. 31, 2025.

The approved funding ensures firefighters represented by IAFF Local 5182 receive back pay owed under the negotiated agreements while allowing the city to manage the costs through existing reserve funds and budget allocations.
