Learning Council hosts Story Walk at Lloydminster Library for Family Literacy Week

With Saskatchewan celebrating Family Literacy Week, the Lloydminster Learning Council is hosting a StoryWalk at the Lloydminster Library that’s running until Sunday, Jan. 28.

Also, the theme for the week is Let’s Have a Party and all schools are getting copies of the theme book – The Party by Barbara Reid, says Kim Englot, program coordinator.

“She uses clay in the design of the graphics of her book. She moulds everything with clay and takes pictures.”

The aim this week is to encourage family literacy and activities that include things like doing the laundry and baking, especially where reading the instructions, sorting colours, and measuring ingredients are important.

“Family literacy is not necessarily just reading and writing, it involves anything we use in our day-to-day life that teaches our kids about how the world is.”

Grade 2 students at Barr Colony will be getting several books of varying reading levels and topics on Wednesday when the Learning Council visits them.

Family Literacy Day is on Jan. 27.
