Lloydminster kidney patients get expanded dialysis unit

With fundraising efforts dating back to 2019, the expanded renal dialysis unit for Lloydminster kidney patients is finally open.

The new facility at the Community Services Building, 3830 43 Avenue, next to the Lloydminster Hospital saw its first clients on Sep. 9 2025, according to a joint AHS-SHA statement.

The project received $6.2 million from the Alberta government’s Rural Health Facilities Revitalization Program. This funding was an increase from $4.25 million in the original proposal.

There were five dialysis stations at the hospital and the expansion gives patients six stations for treatment with the possibility of expanding to nine in the future. The new unit will serve 24 patients, up from the previous 20.

Back in Oct. 2019, the fundraising gala of the Lloydminster Region Housing Foundation brought in $170,000 for the project. At that time, the Alberta government had committed $2.2 million.

Hemodialysis patients typically receive three, four-hour treatments per week.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
