A Lloydminster Comprehensive High School graduate is being recognized for her role in a heroic emergency response that saved lives during a serious school bus accident in Tisdale last fall.
Bailey Steier, now a certified paramedic and recent graduate of the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Paramedic Program, was awarded the Star of Life Team Medal at the Paramedic Services Chiefs of Saskatchewan Emergency Medical Services Provincial Awards held at Government House in Regina.
The medal, presented by Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre, honours acts of heroism, leadership, and excellence in emergency medical services.
Steier and her colleagues from Melfort Ambulance Care were part of a multi-agency team that responded to a devastating bus crash involving 28 passengers — 27 of them children aged 14 to 17. The driver and six of the students sustained serious injuries.
The accident left several students seriously injured, with one youth airlifted for care. The team’s swift and coordinated response ensured that every patient was assessed and treated under challenging conditions.
The full response team included members from:
- Melfort Ambulance Care – Leighton Ballard, Kamiryn Klassen, Shannon Mcharen, Bailey Steier
- Medavie Health Services West – Shamrock/Rose Valley – Jessica Donly, Raphael Hudec
- Naicam & District Ambulance – Stacy Church, Clayton (Trevor) Woosley
- Tisdale Ambulance Care – Carson Scheller, Jessica Loch, Brock Wildman, Paige Woosley
- MCCN – Amanda Brown, Natasha Cameron, Brooklyn Deichert, Avery Watt
The ceremony was led by Paramedic Service Chief Lyle Karasiuk and attended by dignitaries including MLA for Lloydminster Colleen Young.
Steier’s recognition highlights not only her personal achievement but also the strength of Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s paramedic training program, which prepared several of the responders for frontline service.
