Suicide prevention grants for Lloydminster, St. Walburg

Both Lloydminster and St. Walburg communities have received funding under the Saskatchewan Suicide Prevention Grant program.

The City of Lloydminster has received $9,740 and the Town of St. Walburg received $10,000 for its Walk for Mental Health. Also, the Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation received $10,000.

How the grant will be used in Lloydminster

The City set up a Social Policy Framework with a Mental Health Working group which has a goal to provide mental health training to 1,000 residents. Under the Saskatchewan Suicide Prevention Program Grant, the Working Group will benefit from:

  • 250 licenses of LivingWorks Start which is a 90 minute program that allows people to “notice the signs, and connect someone to supports so they can find hope in their time of distress
  • These supports will be rolled out across the City later this year

Background

In Lloydminster, the 2022 social needs assessment indicated seven priorities:

  • Access to Health and Social Services
  • Income Inequity
  • Transportation
  • Safety and Security
  • Mental Health
  • Recreation
  • Housing and Homelessness

The Saskatchewan government release indicated that the support was for suicide prevention initiatives across the province as part of Pillars for Life: The Saskatchewan Suicide Prevention Plan.

Fifty-three grants were awarded totaling $480,000.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
