Lloydminster rearing and ready for Costco

The Costco sign is up at the location on 75 Avenue in Lloydminster’s southwest corner, and residents and City officials are looking forward to the advent of Costco coming to the Border City.

The long-anticipated development is coming to an area that is seeing housing developments under construction and proposed expansion in the coming years with land set aside for a possible Highway 16 bypass in the future.

Bright spotlight

The president of the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce, Jackie Tomayer sees the build as bright spotlight for the city.

“For the Chamber, this development is an important step in advancing our vision of a strong, diversified economy that supports long term business success and ongoing investment. Costco’s move to Lloydminster shines a brighter spotlight on our city, reinforces confidence in our market, and encourages additional businesses and entrepreneurs to see the potential here,” says Tomayer. “We are committed to engaging with our members, municipal leadership, and regional partners to ensure that the positive effects are felt broadly and contribute to a more prosperous future for Lloydminster.”

Ready for Costco

The Costco sign, which went up just before the Family Day break, is being greeted by residents including Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

“Like many residents, I was pleased to see the recently installed sign at the southwest worksite confirming Costco’s planned arrival in Lloydminster. On behalf of our community, let me be among the first to say, ‘Welcome, Costco,” says Aalbers. “A retail development of this scale has the potential to be transformative for our city. It will complement the strong range of local businesses and services already operating here, while attracting increased regional traffic and investment. This is a significant and exciting step forward for Lloydminster’s continued growth and economic momentum.”

Costco Lloydminster

The Lloydminster Costco, when completed, is listed as having some 160,000 square feet over 20 acres with 900 parking stalls at 75 Avenue and what will eventually be 19 Street.

The building permit was issued last October with a year’s timeframe to proceed.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
