Cenovus posts record production and strong results to close out 2025

Cenovus Energy is reporting a strong finish to 2025, highlighted by record oil sands production, higher overall output, and continued progress on major projects.

In its fourth‑quarter and full‑year update released Thursday, Feb. 19 the company said it generated $2.4 billion in cash from operating activities in the final quarter of the year, along with $2.7 billion in adjusted funds flow and $1.3 billion in free funds flow.

Record production to end the year

Cenovus hit multiple production milestones in Q4:

  • 917,900 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOE/d)—a record for the company
  • Oil Sands sites, including Foster Creek and Sunrise, delivered their highest-ever quarterly output
  • Downstream operations processed 465,500 barrels per day, running at 98 per cent utilization
  • Production also surged above 970,000 BOE/d in December

Lloydminster assets

The company’s Lloydminster‑area operations also contributed to the strong quarter. Thermal production in the region rose to 106,900 barrels per day, up from 95,700 in the previous quarter, thanks in part to a successful redevelopment well program. The Rush Lake facilities, which had previously been shut in, restarted and continued to ramp up. Lloydminster’s conventional heavy oil production also increased to 28,100 barrels per day, compared with 25,400 in Q3, underscoring steady regional growth.

The Lloydminster Upgrader is listed for planned maintenance in the second quarter. Also on the turnaround list are Foster Creek and Christina Lake facilities in the second and third quarters.

MEG acquisition boosts output

Cenovus completed its purchase of MEG Energy in the fourth quarter, which contributed to higher production at sites like Christina Lake. The company says it is on track to capture $150 million in annual synergies in 2026 and 2027, rising to more than $400 million by 2028.

Money back to shareholders

The company returned $1.1 billion to shareholders in the last quarter of 2025. That includes:

  • $714 million in share buybacks
  • $380 million in common and preferred share dividends

CEO praises strong year

President and CEO Jon McKenzie said the strong performance was driven by the company’s people and assets, noting that Cenovus is well positioned to keep delivering long‑term value after a year marked by “record production, strong results, and the strategic acquisition of MEG.”

Financial picture

For the full year:

  • Net earnings: $3.9 billion
  • Cash from operating activities: $8.2 billion
  • Adjusted funds flow: $8.9 billion
  • Free funds flow: $4.0 billion
  • Long‑term debt rose to $11 billion, mainly due to the MEG acquisition

Major projects moving forward

Cenovus says key projects are advancing well, including:

  • Foster Creek optimization, completed ahead of schedule, adding about 30,000 barrels per day
  • Christina Lake North expansion, aiming to add 40,000 barrels per day by 2028
  • West White Rose offshore project, which is nearing readiness for first oil expected in the second quarter of 2026

Looking at reserves

As of year‑end 2025, Cenovus reported:

  • 6.1 billion BOE in proved reserves
  • 9.6 billion BOE in proved and probable reserves
  • A reserves life index of about 28 years

Dividends

The company declared a $0.20 quarterly dividend for March 31, 2026, along with dividends for preferred shareholders.
