Duo facing charges after flight from Onion Lake RCMP

Two people are facing charges after fleeing from police in the Onion Lake area.

On February 20, around 10:45 a.m., Onion Lake RCMP received a report of a suspicious person outside a home on Onion Lake Cree Nation. A truck had reportedly pulled up to the property, and someone broke the window of a vehicle parked outside.

Officers soon spotted a truck matching the description and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver sped away. Nearby detachments and Onion Lake Fire Rescue Peacekeepers were alerted to watch for the vehicle.

At about 2:00 p.m., Maidstone RCMP located a similar truck on Highway 3 heading west toward Highway 17. When officers tried to stop it, the vehicle fled once again at high speed, heading back toward Onion Lake.

Later that day, Peacekeepers notified police that the truck was parked outside a home. Officers went to the residence and arrested three people. The investigation determined the truck had been reported stolen from Two Hills, Alberta, and the licence plate on it had also been reported stolen.

Following further investigation by Onion Lake and Maidstone RCMP, two individuals have been charged with:

  • Flight from a peace officer
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

One of the accused is to return to Lloydminster Provincial Court on April 1. The second accused appeared in court on Mar. 5, pleaded guilty to the flight charge, and received a 161‑day jail sentence along with one year of probation. The remaining charges were withdrawn.

A third person who was arrested at the scene was released without charges.

His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
