Chalking hope and walking together: Lloydminster marks 11 years of maternal mental health support

For more than a decade, Lloydminster families have been walking, talking and leaning on one another—and this May, that support takes centre stage once again.

The Lloydminster Maternal Mental Health Initiative is marking its 11th year with two days of free community events aimed at raising awareness, reducing stigma and connecting families with local supports during the perinatal period.

Taking place May 7 and 8, the events are open to the public and designed to create safe, welcoming spaces for parents, caregivers and supporters to learn, share and connect.

Maternal Mental Health Community Day – May 7

The celebration begins with Maternal Mental Health Community Day on Thursday, May 7, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Prairie North Plaza. The come‑and‑go event will feature local organizations offering resources and supports focused on mental well‑being. Attendees can explore information booths, hear from guest speakers and enjoy a family‑friendly atmosphere with indoor playground access, refreshments, giveaways and on‑site childminding.

Chalk the Walk – May 7 at 6:00 p.m.

In the evening, the community is invited to Chalk the Walk, starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Bud Miller All Seasons Park picnic shelter.

Participants are encouraged to decorate the sidewalks with messages of encouragement, gratitude and creativity ahead of the annual Walk With Her event. Organizers say the activity is about connection, expression and showing visible support for mental health.

Walk With Her – May 8

The celebration wraps up Friday morning with Walk With Her – Lloydminster’s Annual Perinatal Walk for Mental Health, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Bud Miller All Seasons Park. The event includes a mini “Move Your Mood” session, a community walk and a barbecue. Participants are invited to walk in support of themselves, a loved one, or in memory of someone impacted by perinatal mental health challenges.

Fundraiser

The walk also serves as a fundraiser, with all proceeds staying local to support the Mothers First and Move Your Mood programs, as well as ongoing education and outreach in the community.
Organizers say perinatal mental health challenges affect about one in five individuals, yet many struggle in silence. Over the past 11 years, the Lloydminster Maternal Mental Health Initiative has worked to change that by encouraging open conversation and improving access to care.

Community members are encouraged to attend one or all of the events and take part in the growing movement. More information is available through Midwest Family Connections or the Lloydminster Maternal Mental Health Initiative Facebook group.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
