The Lloydminster Catholic School Division (LCSD) has officially introduced Mitch Cherry as the new principal of St. Mary’s Elementary School.
The announcement was celebrated on Thursday, June 4 during the school’s Kindergarten Orientation, as the school prepares for a wave of innovative new programs.
Cherry succeeds outgoing Principal Sue Grams, who leaves the school after years of dedicated service. Division officials credited Grams with building a strong foundation of faith, academic achievement, and a robust culture of learning that sets the stage for the school’s next chapter.
Stepping into a season of innovation
Cherry takes the helm at a time of significant momentum for St. Mary’s Elementary. The school community is currently rolling out several major initiatives aimed at boosting student well-being and academic success.
- Universal Nutrition Program: St. Mary’s recently launched a division-backed nutrition program that provides free breakfast and lunch to all students, ensuring daily access to healthy meals.
- Adaptive Kindergarten Programming: The school is launching a flexible, responsive Kindergarten format designed to cater directly to the varied educational and emotional needs of early learners.
- Playground Fundraising Success: Community fundraising for a new school playground has outpaced expectations, with construction potentially breaking ground as early as the upcoming school year.
Deeply personal homecoming
For Cherry, the appointment represents both a professional milestone and a personal homecoming. As a former student, teacher, and administrator within the Lloydminster Catholic School Division, his roots in the community run deep.
”Becoming a principal in LCSD is truly a dream come true for me,” Cherry said. “LCSD is where I have always felt a strong sense of belonging. I am proud to say I am LCSD.”
As a father raising three young children in his hometown, Cherry noted that the transition to an elementary leadership role holds a special significance.
”As a parent of three young children, I understand firsthand that every child learns and develops differently,” Cherry added. “I am especially excited about continuing to innovate within St. Mary’s, starting with our adaptive Kindergarten program. My goal is to support a learning environment that not only meets the needs of each child, but also respects and supports the family as a whole.”
Division leadership looks ahead
LCSD Director of Education, Glenda Kary expressed strong confidence in Cherry’s ability to lead St. Mary’s into its next era, emphasizing his relationship-driven approach to education.
”Mitch is a passionate Catholic educator whose leadership is rooted in relationships, service, and a deep commitment to student success,” Kary said. “With innovative programming, enhanced student nutrition, and a vibrant school community, the future is incredibly bright for St. Mary’s Elementary.”
