Man charged after ATV collides with police vehicle, suspicious fire reported on Onion Lake Cree Nation

A man is facing multiple criminal charges following an ATV collision at the Onion Lake RCMP detachment and a suspicious vehicle fire later the same day on Onion Lake Cree Nation.

According to Onion Lake RCMP, officers observed a man driving an ATV erratically in the detachment parking lot at about 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23. Police say the ATV collided with an unoccupied police vehicle, causing damage. A second police vehicle also sustained damage when debris struck one of its windows. No injuries were reported.

RCMP said the ATV fled the scene following the collision.

Later that evening, at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers received a report of a vehicle fire on Onion Lake Cree Nation. Investigators determined the fire was suspicious and was connected to the earlier incident at the detachment parking lot. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

Police arrested a man nearby and continued their investigation. As a result, the accused is charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance, operating a conveyance while disqualified, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, mischief under $5,000, arson causing damage to a motor vehicle and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Aug. 27.
