LABIS celebrates 40 years with 40 Days, 40 Stories campaign

The Lloydminster and Area Brain Injury Society (LABIS) is marking a major milestone this fall by celebrating 40 years of supporting people living with acquired brain injuries and their families.

The organization has launched 40 Days, 40 Stories, a social media campaign highlighting the people, experiences and community support that have shaped LABIS since it was founded in January, 1986.

“Forty years of LABIS, and what a thing to celebrate, says Kelly Mason, Communications and Events Coordinator. “This community has spent four decades showing up for its own — neighbours helping neighbours through the hardest moments, and coming out the other side together. The stories we’re sharing over these 40 days are full of that spirit. Here’s to the next forty.”

Campaign underway

The campaign began Wednesday, Oct. 7 and runs through Nov. 15. Over the next 40-days LABIS will share stories recognizing participants, families, volunteers, board members, staff, sponsors and community members who have contributed to the organization’s growth over the past four decades.

LABIS says the anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on its history while also looking toward the future.

“Some stories will make us smile. Some will bring back memories. Some will remind us just how far we’ve come,” says LABIS.

Online fundraiser at Canada Helps

The anniversary celebration also serves as a fundraiser to help support future programs and services. Community members are being encouraged to donate $40 for 40 years, $400 for the future, or any amount they can afford through the organization’s online campaign on the website Canada Helps.

LABIS says donations will help ensure it can continue providing programs, resources, support and connections for individuals living with acquired brain injuries and their families throughout the region.

Winter online auction, Nov. 16

The campaign will lead into the organization’s winter online auction, which is scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 16.

Founded in 1986 by local families who recognized the need for greater support and understanding for those affected by brain injury, LABIS has grown into a longstanding community organization serving Lloydminster and the surrounding area.

The organization’s anniversary theme is “Nobody Should Face Brain Injury Alone.”

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
