The fire following the incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright was reported to be contained within the Municipal District of Wainwright and was not expected to cross the fireguard, according to the town’s fire chief.
In a statement dated Oct. 19, Aime Smyl, the Town of Wainwright’s director of protective services and fire chief, said smoke could linger over the coming days.
Smyl praised Wainwright Fire & Rescue, which includes the town and municipal district fire departments, for their professionalism, courage and dedication during the incident.
He also thanked the agencies and neighbouring fire departments that responded, including National Defence Fire Services Wainwright, fire departments in Irma, Chauvin, Edgerton and Vermilion, Lloydminster Fire Rescue, Alberta Wildfire, East Central 9-1-1, the RCMP and health-care providers.
Smyl said he was humbled by the number of other fire departments that offered assistance.
“At this time, our priority is maintaining our ability to provide emergency response services to the Town and M.D,” Smyl said in a statement.
He said his thoughts were with those directly affected by the incident, their loved ones and others in the community.
