The Saskatchewan government has proclaimed Oct. 26 to 31 as Saskatchewan Aviation and Aerospace Week, recognizing the aviation sector’s contributions to the province’s economy, transportation network and emergency services.
Kim Gartner, Saskatchewan’s Highways Minister, announced the designation Monday, Oct. 26 highlighting the industry’s role in connecting communities, supporting key economic sectors and delivering critical services.
“Aviation plays an important role in keeping Saskatchewan connected and our economy growing,” Gartner said in a news release. He noted the sector supports agriculture, industry, tourism and emergency response efforts across the province.
According to the province, aviation helps transport workers and equipment to mining operations, brings visitors to Saskatchewan and assists farmers with crop management. Air services also play a critical role in medical evacuations, policing operations and emergency response efforts.
Janet Keim, president of the Saskatchewan Aviation Council, welcomed the recognition and said the industry continues to contribute to the province’s growth and development.
Saskatchewan is home to approximately 150 aircraft landing facilities, including helipads, private and community-owned airports, the national airport system facilities in Regina and Saskatoon, 15 Wing Moose Jaw and 16 provincial airports operated by the Ministry of Highways.
The province says the week is intended to recognize the aviation professionals and organizations that help keep Saskatchewan connected while supporting economic activity and public safety.
