A new performing arts festival for young people in Lloydminster is already exceeding expectations before its first event takes the stage.
STAR Fest, set for Wednesday, Nov. 4 at the Vic Juba Community Theatre, has attracted more than 100 student registrations, from grades 8-12 from eight schools and groups across the region. The inaugural festival will feature about 40 performances as well as a variety of workshops for aspiring performers.
Christine Brochu, drama teacher at Lloydminster Comprehensive High School (LCHS) and one of the event organizers, said they had hoped for a modest turnout but were overwhelmed by the level of interest.
“I am so proud and so grateful for all of the generosity and talent that will be shared next week, and I look forward to reflecting with you all after things are said and done, to take in your feedback and ensure the longevity of this event for our youth performing arts community here in Lloydminster.”
Brochu said the strong response bodes well for the future of the festival and the local youth performing arts community.
Getting ready
Final preparations are continuing ahead of Wednesday’s event. Organizers are coordinating volunteers from the Spotlight Theatre Kids Association, Cenovus Cares and the LCHS Leadership Group to help ensure the day runs smoothly.
While a few students are still being added to the program and some workshop spots remain to be filled, organizers say any remaining adjustments to the schedule are expected to be minor.
With the work on the home stretch, organizers will be gathering feedback after the final curtain call to help ensure STAR Fest becomes a long-term event for young performers in the Lloydminster area.
