BreastCheck mammography services unavailable in Lloydminster due to staffing shortages

Residents seeking BreastCheck mammography screening in Lloydminster will need to travel to other locations as the service remains unavailable at Lloydminster Hospital due to staffing shortages.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority says BreastCheck screening mammography services are not currently being offered in Lloydminster because of ongoing workforce challenges involving medical radiation technologists. As a result, there is no wait list for BreastCheck appointments at the local hospital.

Individuals eligible for the province’s breast cancer screening program are being offered appointments at one of seven permanent screening sites across Saskatchewan or through one of the province’s mobile mammography units.

The nearest permanent screening location for Lloydminster-area residents is in North Battleford, where appointments are currently being booked into mid-to-late November.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority says expanding access to breast cancer screening remains a priority and plans are underway to bring a BreastCheck mobile mammography unit to Lloydminster in 2027. Specific dates for the service have not yet been finalized.

The health authority says recruitment and retention of health-care workers, including the medical radiation technologists who perform breast screening exams, continues to be a key focus as part of the province’s Health Human Resource Action Plan. Lloydminster is among the communities eligible for recruitment incentives aimed at attracting qualified staff.

The BreastCheck program is delivered through a partnership between the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
