St. Paul RCMP member facing child pornography charges https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/65278/featured/st-paul-rcmp-member-facing-child-pornography-charges/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 21:05:47 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=65278

A member of the St. Paul RCMP detachment has been suspended and is facing child pornography charges following an investigation from the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit.

ALERT officials say the investigation into 33-year-old Evan Peacock started in November 2023, when the accused allegedly uploaded a pair of what is being described as videos depicting child sexual exploitation to a social media platform. They were tipped off about the alleged upload from the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Crime Centre. The investigation led to the execution of a search warrant at Peacock's home, where authorities say evidence was seized, with a forensic investigation set to be conducted on the devices seized by police.

Authorities say Peacock’s identity was only learned earlier this month, which prompted an “expeditious” effort to make an arrest.

In a statement, St. Paul Detachment NCO Bobby Burgess says the detachment personnel are shocked and disappointed by these allegations.

“Furthermore, our members are concerned with the possible public perception and confidence of our Detachment and the RCMP following such news,” he says.

“I assure you this isn’t a reflection of our Detachment membership as a whole, and these allegations are against a single person.”

Burgess adds they were unaware of an investigation into the officer’s alleged conduct until he was being processed in a neighboring detachment on Thursday morning.

Peacock is facing two counts of possession of child pornography, distributing child pornography, and accessing child pornography.

ICE unit members say while the investigation and charges are related to online offences, the nature of the suspect’s employment placed him in a position of trust and authority. Officials are asking anyone with information about this case to come forward and contact the police.

A new hire is in the mix to support the mental health of students at the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School.

With new funding from the Saskatchewan government through the Mental Health Capacity Building (MHCB) in Schools program the new staffer will need to bring their experience in youth mental health to the table.

"Lloydminster Comprehensive High School, LPSD, and the Mental Health Capacity Building Team will collaborate to create a vision and plan for LCHS that will enhance the school environment and sense of belonging of all students. This plan will involve some additional targeted staff to aid the team in actualizing the plan," says Stacey Klisowsky, Superintendent of Education, Lloydminster Public School Division.

The government announcement of new support was made on Thursday. Lloydminster Comprehensive will join 15 schools in Saskatchewan to receive more mental health programs for students.

Flags lowered at City Hall to reflect on work place safety, honour those who have died https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/65263/featured/flags-lowered-at-city-hall-to-reflect-on-work-place-safety-honour-those-who-have-died/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 17:10:57 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=65263

Honouring those who have died on the job, along with a focus on safety is why flags are lowered at Lloydminster City Hall.

The National Day of Mourning which has been observed in Canada since 1984 brings the construction community together to reflect and honour those who have died on the job while keeping the focus on safety.

"As a nation, we grieve as one," says Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

In Alberta, 165 workers died on the job in 2023, and in Saskatchewan 29 deaths were reported to the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board.

For comparison, in 2022, in Alberta, 161 lives were lost on the job and 39 people perished from workplace-related incidents in Saskatchewan.

"The National Day of Mourning is a day of reflection - and a day of action. We must come together to ensure that tragedies do not happen again and that every worker has the right to work in a safe and healthy work environment. Every worker has the right to return home safely at the end of the day to their friends and family," notes Aalbers.

Aalbers called on employers to ensure they are doing their part to provide a safe working environment for staff and protect employees from harm. Also, that workers have a responsibility to look out for their own safety and that of their colleagues.

"This means following proper safety procedures, using protective equipment, and reporting potential hazards and incidents immediately," says Aalbers.

The mayor signed the proclamation to recognize the Day of Mourning. Flags at City Hall were lowered and those assembled observed a moment of silent reflection.

The Lloydminster commemoration was organized by the city's safety team, the Lloydminster Construction Association, Lakeland Regional Safety Committee and community partners. First responders, fire crews and teams from ATCO along with city staff paused for reflection on Friday morning.

The National Day of Mourning is observed every year on April 28.

Slowdown says Citizens On Patrol https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/65255/featured/slowdown-says-citizens-on-patrol/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 23:12:54 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=65255

Lloydminster drivers have a new agency to encourage them to ease off the speed when driving in neighbourhoods as Citizens On Patrol is operating Speed Watch.

In areas where residents say drivers cannot seem to stay below the posted speed limit, the group is providing an extra set of eyes. Founded in 1979, the volunteers work with the RCMP and the city to supply an additional "presence within the community."

As the warmer weather cranks up, the group will be stationed around schools and parks. It says they won't take pictures or license plates, but they will call in erratic driving.

They are currently fundraising for a REAL Speedwatch sign to collect data. Also dealing with regular costs like fuel and repairs. A big ticket item is a new vehicle as one of their rides is at the end of its service life.

Residents can find more information on getting involved and making donations by contacting Citizens On Patrol through social media and online.

Lloyd Comp joins list of schools getting more mental health supports https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/65245/featured/lloyd-comp-joins-list-of-schools-getting-more-mental-health-supports/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 21:39:23 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=65245

Lloydminster Comprehensive High School has been added to the list of schools in Saskatchewan getting more mental health supports.

This as five more schools across the province will come under the Mental Health Capacity Building (MHCB) in Schools program with extra funding of $1 million.

The five schools were selected through an application-based process. Along with Lloydminster, the list is Peacock Collegiate in Moose Jaw, Carpenter High School in Meadow Lake, St. Alphonsus School in Yorkton, and Balfour Collegiate in Regina. The Saskatchewan government is spending to date $3 million on the program.

"More students will receive more support for their mental health and overall wellbeing," says education minister Jeremy Cockrill.

The addition brings the number of schools in the program to 15 including North Battleford Comprehensive High School, and John Paul II Collegiate in North Battleford. The government says it wants to extend the program to all 27 school divisions.

The MHCB program promotes positive mental health in children, youth, families, and people in the community who interact with children. With a focus on prevention, early identification, and intervention, it also helps young people better manage their feelings and lets them know where they can find help. Through collaboration between schools, communities, and health care providers, schools serve as a resource hub for mental health programming, note officials.

Downtown renos to resume, May 6. https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/64990/featured/downtown-renos-to-resume-may-6/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 20:21:31 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=64990

Crews are set to resume construction work in downtown Lloydminster on May 6, to partially re-open on June 8 in time for Streetfest.

While the renos will continue after the street festival, the work will see road closures at the intersection of 50 Avenue and 50 Street and 50 Street between 49 Avenue and 50 Avenue.

Work will start at the 50 Avenue and 50 Street Intersection and progress east towards 49 Avenue. Sidewalk and front door business access will remain open at all times.

Project Scope

In 2023, the program replaced and upgraded underground infrastructure throughout the downtown core. Above ground, the renos dealt with the roadway surface and sidewalks. This year benches will be added along with landscaping and other public amenities to bring the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP) to fruition, say city planners.

Work will occur between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Sundays.

The Façade Improvement Grant is still open for applications, including temporary relocation assistance, if needed by businesses.

Detour and local traffic-only signs will be placed to indicate how to access businesses while avoiding the construction zone.

Remembering workers who died on the job https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/65229/featured/remembering-workers-who-died-on-the-job/ Thu, 25 Apr 2024 19:47:30 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?p=65229

In Alberta, 165 workers died on the job in 2023, and in Saskatchewan 29 deaths were reported to the Saskatchewan Workers' Compensation Board.

For comparison, in 2022, in Alberta, 161 lives were lost on the job and 39 people perished from workplace-related incidents in Saskatchewan.

The numbers are cause for reflection as Canada observes the Day of Mourning each year on April 28 with flags flown at half-mast.

In Lloydminster, the city and community partners will pause to remember the Day of Mourning on Friday, April 26 at the west entrance to City Hall.

"One fatality is one too many," says Gord Dobrowolsky, chairperson, Saskatchewan Workers' Compensation Board. "That's why through the 2023-28 Fatalities and Serious Injuries Strategy we are working together with employers and employees to prevent injuries and fatalities."
