Remembering workers who died on the job

In Alberta, 165 workers died on the job in 2023, and in Saskatchewan 29 deaths were reported to the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board.

For comparison, in 2022, in Alberta, 161 lives were lost on the job and 39 people perished from workplace-related incidents in Saskatchewan.

The numbers are cause for reflection as Canada observes the Day of Mourning each year on April 28 with flags flown at half-mast.

In Lloydminster, the city and community partners will pause to remember the Day of Mourning on Friday, April 26 at the west entrance to City Hall.

“One fatality is one too many,” says Gord Dobrowolsky, chairperson, Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board. “That’s why through the 2023-28 Fatalities and Serious Injuries Strategy we are working together with employers and employees to prevent injuries and fatalities.”
