This week: How Janis begat Stevie, how Canada begat heavy metal, and how Phil Collins saved the day at Live Aid and took hell for it!

--

Part I- How Janis Began Stevie: EVERY musician that wants to "make it" knows they gotta take their beats from time to time. Most wouldn't call it "the greatest experience of their life," but Stevie Nicks DID, in the case of Janis Joplin.

Part II- Heavy Metal, A Canadian Invention: It's not always acknowledged south of the 49th how many inventions are Canadian: lines on a road, garbage bags, the entire sport of basketball, and possibly, in a nomenclature way, heavy metal itself.

Part III- Those Himalayas of The Mind: A look at the recording, liner notes and lyrical mastery of The Tragically Hip's Phantom Power. It's been referred to as "Year Zero" of the Hip, and for good reason.

Part IV- Like Cats on a Hot Driveway: How do you get 200,000 fans to swarm a semi-abandoned airport runway on a hot day in July? Get Bob Dylan to show up for the first time in 12 years. Some facts about the Blackbushe Aerodome show, and how it wouldn't have been the most...ideal show.

Part V- Phil Collins Saves the Day, and Gets Hell For It: Artists like Queen, Madonna and David Bowie get a lot of love for what they did at Live Aid. Not enough credit is given to Phil Collins though, who put in a ton of work, including being in two countries in ONE DAY, to make a lot of the distinct performances we love a reality. He's a true MVP.

Liner Note Leftovers #14- You Got Schooled https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/podcast-episode/liner-note-leftovers-14-you-got-schooled/ Thu, 01 Jul 2021 21:30:19 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?post_type=podcast&p=48041

Liner Note Leftovers is officially back! This week: Axl Rose fights an entire city. The Beatles movie so bad Peter Frampton was glad he was in a car accident and missed it. Is "Smooth" a sexy song or a meme song?

This Week's Menu:

Part I- Back to School, to Prove to Dad I'm Not A Fool: Tons of musicians hold honorary degrees, but even more had to work hard to get educated. Including Billy Joel, who had to work 25 years to get his high school degree. But it worked out for him, wouldn't you say?

Part II- I'd Rather Be Listening to the 1999 Smash Hit "Smooth": Depending on who you ask, the 1999 song "Smooth" by Santana and Rob Thomas is either a bop or makes you want to pop your eardrums. How did it come about though? It took a lot of convincing on both sides.

Part III- Flaming Lips Set The Record Straight: Have you ever considered how hard it would be to set a world record? The Flaming Lips knows what it takes. Just eight shows in the span of 24 hours with a 12 hour road trip in between. How'd they do it? Here's how.

Part IV- Worst. Beatles Movie. Ever: You wouldn't think you'd ever be glad to be in a car accident, but Peter Frampton MIGHT. That's because he didn't have to see the abomination of a Beatles movie that was in theatres...starring HIM!

Part V- Axl Rose says "F*** You, St. Louis!": The story of the "Riverport Riot." Otherwise known as the time Axl Rose took on the entire city of St. Louis, and it ends in pandemonium. Ever seen that Axl Rose freak-out video? This is why it happened.

Liner Note Leftovers #13- Sympathy for the Devil https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/podcast-episode/liner-note-leftovers-13-sympathy-for-the-devil/ Fri, 11 Jun 2021 03:41:56 +0000 https://www.mylloydminsternow.com/?post_type=podcast&p=47581

This week: How Rocky III was almost VERY different from a music sense. Gene Simmons claims Ancient Mesopotamians ripped him off. Very freaky occurrences surrounding Sympathy for The Devil.

--

Part I- When Tommy Met Bobby: Go ahead and meet your heroes, but MAYBE not sneaking on to their VIP list, and you're covered in axel grease. The story of when Tom Petty met Bob Dylan.

Part II- Eye of The Tiger, Mouth of a Teamster!: Survivor's Eye of The Tiger was the biggest song of 1982, thanks to its use in Rocky III. It was almost RADICALLY different though...by which I mean it almost never existed.

Part III- Gene Simmons Claims History Ripped Him Off: Gene Simmons claims he owns something you can do with your hands. It ended very poorly, but when Gene meets Gene's ego, you can do no wrong.

Part IV- Don't Stop, Believ...: You remember where you when you first saw the ending to The Sopranos. You might have broken your TV. That ending might not have happened without Steve Perry knowing the ending, and being sworn to secrecy.

Part V- The Devil & The Rolling Stones: If you dig into the history of "Sympathy For The Devil" there's a TON of freaky occurrences associated. Someone probably should have realized something was up when the lamp spontaneously combusted.
