A Lloydminster native is in the running for Miss Universe Canada.

Akirta Sran is one of 65 finalists for the national crown, which will be presented in Toronto on May 23rd. Sran says she decided to go for the crown because the pageant supports humanitarian work.

Sran has a passion for charity, dividing her time between three organizations that help the visually impaired – Alberta Society for the Visually Impaired, Optometry Giving Sight, and OnSight Eye Doctors. Through the pageant Sran is now fundraising for Operation Smile, a charity that supports children born with facial deformities such as cleft palate across the world.

Sran has organized a wine-and-cheese event in support of the charity in Lloydminster, The Grape Gatsby. It will be held May 9th, and will include a mint raffle, and a heads-or-tails raffle. Tickets are $25 per person, and $20 per student. They can be bought at Liquor Junxin and online through Sran’s Miss Universe Canada Facebook page.
