Strategy to get nurse practitioners to work in remote locations
A new recruitment strategy to lure nurse practitioners to rural and remote locations in Saskatchewan. Minister responsible for Rural and Remote Health Randy Weekes announced a strategy that encourages nurse practitioners to work in communities with a population of 10,000 or less. Since 2012, the province has invested 630 thousand dollars for additional nurse practitioner seats and are on target to meet the commitment of 20 new training positions. Nurse practitioners will be eligible for incentive grants of up to $40,000 over five years for practising in hard-to-recruit positions or locations. It is expected that the strategy will cost about $250,000 annually.Over 170 nurse practitioners are currently licensed in the province. This represents an increase of 71 per cent since 2007.
