Mayor of Drumheller makes good on wager with Mayor Aalbers

The mayor of Drumheller visited the Border City to pay off a friendly wager. Mayor Heather Colberg hopped in one of the city’s street sweepers to pay off an old debt to Mayor Gerald Aalbers.

In June 2018, the town of Drumheller lost out to the city of Lloydminster in a closely contested vote for Canada’s 2017 Most Rider Friendly Community. It’s a good-natured competition initiated by Community Futures offices across Canada. As part of the competition, Mayor Aalbers and Mayor Colberg agreed that the winning community would put the other’s mayor to work cleaning local roadways.

Mayor Colberg joined the Colonial Days Parade in one of the city’s street sweepers following breakfast at Denny’s. She thanks the city and the mayor for showing her hospitality, and holds that the town of Drumheller is also very motorcycle rider friendly.

“We’re absolutely rider friendly, we get a lot of motorbikes coming through in the summer. It’s just an incredible view, and [with] spectacular scenery around you, and you’re going right through a valley the whole time. It’s pretty neat,” says Mayor Colberg, adding that Lloydminster is a beautiful community.

Mayor Colberg hasn’t been in the Border City for a number of years, not since her son last played hockey in the town. Mayor Aalbers is delighted to show her some of the city’s hospitality.

“I appreciate Mayor Colberg coming to honour our wager that we made a year ago when we were in the Rider Friendly contest. Our city is excited to welcome her, it’s a great opportunity to promote the city, as well as Drumheller,” says Aalbers, adding that one community had to come out on top.

“Drumheller is a great town. One won, one lost, and I appreciate her making up on her offer,” says Aalbers. Mayor Colberg will also be present with Mayor Aalbers for the city’s pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. on July 11.
