Dangerous Persons Alert canceled on Big Island Lake Cree Nation

Update: The dangerous persons alert for Big Island Lake Cree Nation and surrounding area has been canceled as at 5:04 p.m. CST.

Saskatchewan RCMP are updating the situation after it issued a dangerous persons alert following an incident on Big Island Lake Cree Nation in which one person died and three people were injured and taken to hospital, on Dec. 30.

At about 6:00 a.m. CST Pierceland RCMP received a report of the shooting. At 8:23 a.m., a dangerous persons alert was issued by Saskatchewan RCMP. Residents were advised to find a safe location and stay there, and to lock all doors.

RCMP continue to seek details on the suspects and are looking for two individuals who left the location on an ATV.

Inspector Ashley St. Germaine, senior investigative officer with Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Branch said during a media briefing that shooting occurred outdoors.

Lifting of dangerous persons alert

St. Germaine says the dangerous persons alert will remain in place and could be lifted depending on the time that has elapsed, that its contained to one location, and that no one else has been injured.

“I am hopeful that we will have more determination on that later today,” said St. Germaine.

The investigation remains active. Also, police are determining if the incident was targeted or not.

Saskatoon RCMP Major Crimes will now take lead of the investigation going forward, said St. Germaine.

Request for information

The dangerous persons alert remains active. RCMP are asking the public for more information as they seek to identify the suspects. Also, if you see the suspects, do not approach them and to call 911.

Alberta RCMP support

When the SaskAlert went out, Alberta RCMP were made aware by the real time operation centre that there is no link to the province. However, due to the proximity, border services were offered if needed. At this time, Alberta RCMP have not had to take any action.
