Saskatchewan celebrates Family Literacy Week Jan. 25–31, focus on mealtime learning

Saskatchewan families, communities, and literacy organizations will unite from January 25 to 31 to celebrate Family Literacy Week, with Family Literacy Day taking place on January 27.

This year’s national theme, “Make Mealtime Family Learning Time,” shines a spotlight on the learning that happens naturally around the table — through conversation, storytelling, reading, counting, cooking, and sharing traditions. The message is simple: everyday moments are rich with opportunities to learn.

Lloydminster events

In Lloydminster, the LPSD circulated the Family Literacy Bingo challenge that is made available by the provincial group, Foundations Learning & Skills Saskatchewan.

“Our schools are happy to celebrate Saskatchewan Literacy Week, with engaging activities that encourage a love of reading for students and families alike,” said LPSD superintendent of education Trisha Rawlake.

Guest readers are visiting schools, and kids will be be dressing up as book characters among the fun activities to encourage reading.

The Lloydminster Public Library has several events including Teen Night, and Storytime.  More details are available on their website.

Province-wide events and resources

Family Literacy Week 2026 will include activities, resources, and community celebrations offered across Saskatchewan. These efforts are coordinated by Foundations Learning & Skills Saskatchewan, working alongside the province’s ten Family Literacy Hubs, ABC Life Literacy Canada, and dozens of community partners who tailor programming to local needs.

In Lloydminster, the Lloydminster Learning Council is the local Family Literacy Hub. Other locations can be found on the Saskatchewan government’s literacy website and explore events happening in their region.

Family Literacy Bingo card – chance to win prizes

A highlight of this year’s programming is the Family Literacy Bingo card, a downloadable activity sheet featuring 25 simple, hands-on mealtime learning prompts. Families who complete three or more squares can submit their card to Foundations Learning or their local Family Literacy Hub by January 31, for a chance to win prizes. The game encourages families to build learning into daily routines in fun and flexible ways.

Strengthening communities through literacy

Family Literacy Week emphasizes that literacy is a lifelong journey that begins at home.

Strong literacy skills support success at school, in the workplace, and in everyday life — from managing money to navigating health information and building confidence.

Last year, 81 percent of parents involved in family literacy programs said they increased learning activities at home, and more than 1,500 families took part across Saskatchewan. Many parents also stepped up as peer leaders and volunteers, strengthening community connections.

Honouring Indigenous languages

Family literacy is also recognized as reconciliation in action, with programs that honour Indigenous languages, cultures, and knowledge systems. Many activities are rooted in belonging, family, and community strength.

By building bridges between home, school, and community, Saskatchewan continues to create more inclusive and responsive environments where families learn and thrive together, noted event planners.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
