Dress warm, Coldest Night of the Year set for Feb. 28

An annual fundraiser for the Lloydminster Men’s Shelter could live up to its name if the weather forecast on Feb. 28 aligns with The Coldest Night billing.

More on that, but first the event aims to shine a light on the plight of the unhoused and organizers note issues surrounding people “experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.”

Thirteen teams comprising 59 walkers are currently signed up, with a goal of raising $44,000, of which over $17,000 has been raised so far.

The course

Walkers will begin and finish at The Olive Tree at 5002 – 51 Avenue from 5:00 p.m. following a 4:00 p.m. meet up with opening remarks at 4:45 p.m. A light meal will be served when the teams return about an hour later.

The route has two options between 2 and 5kms, spanning 50 Street on the north, 55 Avenue to the west, 44 Street/Hwy 16 to the south and 45 Avenue on the east side.

More details on the course and registration are available online.

Weather forecast

With 10 days left to sign up, the weather is promising a healthy dose of winter by the time the teams set out at 5:00 p.m. The thermometer may register -10 to -15C, but that will feel closer to minus 25C. Apart from bringing a water bottle, teams will be well advised to dress warmly.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
