Battle of the Badges skates off at the Hub, March 7

Skates are being sharpened, and bragging rights are once again up for grabs as the Lloydminster RCMP and Lloydminster Fire Rescue prepare to hit the ice for the annual Todd Gustavson Memorial Battle of the Badges hockey fundraiser.

The community showdown takes place Saturday, March 7, with puck drop scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at the Cenovus Energy Hub—the first time the event will be held in the city’s newest arena.

Giving back

This year’s game continues its tradition of giving back. Cash donations collected at the event will support Inclusion Lloydminster, an organization dedicated to assisting individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. Spectators are also encouraged to bring non‑perishable food items, which will be shared between The Olive Tree and The Salvation Army Lloydminster to bolster local food and community support programs.

Previous tally

Last year’s Battle of the Badges demonstrated the community’s generosity in a big way. The game raised $4,283 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lloydminster, helping fund youth mentorship initiatives. In addition, supporters donated 2,903 kilograms (6,400 pounds) of food to The Olive Tree and The Salvation Army Lloydminster—providing crucial supplies for families and individuals in need. The RCMP skated away with a 7–5 victory, earning a year’s worth of bragging rights.

More than hockey

Mayor Gerald Aalbers says the event represents much more than a friendly rivalry.

“Battle of the Badges is more than an afternoon of hockey. It is a great example of how our community comes together to have fun while supporting local organizations,” he said. “The friendly rivalry on the ice helps create real impact off the ice for programs that matter to our community.”

Residents are encouraged to come early, grab a seat, and cheer from the stands. Entry is by donation—either cash or non‑perishable food items.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
