Lloydminster RCMP have laid multiple charges after uncovering a massive haul of unstamped tobacco products during a traffic stop.
On February 22, officers pulled over a semi‑truck and trailer on 44 Street, just west of 50 Avenue in Lloydminster. Police say the driver was unable to produce the required documentation for his cargo, prompting officers to inspect the trailer.
Inside, investigators found 24 pallets containing an estimated 48,000 cartons of contraband tobacco—roughly 7.2 million unstamped cigarettes. RCMP estimate the retail value of the load at more than $6 million, with over $2 million in avoided taxes. The truck, trailer, and its contents were seized as part of the investigation.
The driver is a 62‑year‑old man from Calgary. He was arrested and is facing several charges, including:
- Fraud over $5,000
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- Unlawful possession of tobacco products under the Excise Act
The accused remains in custody and is to return Lloydminster Provincial Court on March 3.
“This seizure represents another significant disruption to illegal tobacco contraband,” said Sgt. Christopher Byford, Operations NCO with Lloydminster RCMP. “Criminal activity undermines legitimate businesses and is often linked to organized crime. Lloydminster RCMP work with provincial and federal partners to combat contraband trafficking and other crime.”
