VIA Rail to keep Wainwright stop as rerouting proposal rejected

VIA Rail has confirmed it has no plans to reroute its transcontinental passenger train service away from Wainwright, ending a campaign by several Prairie municipalities to have the route shifted through Lloydminster and other communities.

Beginning in late 2023, the mayors of Lloydminster, North Battleford, Warman and Yorkton launched an effort to have VIA Rail’s Canadian passenger train moved from its current route along the CN Main Line to the CN Prairie North Line. The proposal would have brought passenger rail service to communities including Lloydminster, Yorkton, Canora, Humboldt, Warman, the Battlefords, Vermilion and Vegreville before reconnecting with the existing line in Edmonton.

Currently, VIA Rail’s Canadian travels through Saskatchewan communities such as Melville, Watrous, Saskatoon and Unity before continuing through Wainwright on its way to Edmonton.

The proposed change faced opposition from municipalities within the M.D. of Wainwright. Local mayors and reeves sent a letter to VIA Rail in 2024 expressing concerns about losing passenger rail service and later submitted another letter urging the Crown corporation to maintain the existing route.

Municipal leaders argued the train remains an important transportation link for residents travelling to medical appointments, business meetings and personal commitments. The service is also commonly used by military families visiting loved ones at CFB Wainwright and attending events at the base.

In a letter dated July 13, 2026, VIA Rail informed local leaders that it would not be moving service out of Wainwright.

“On behalf of the Councils within the M.D. of Wainwright, we are very pleased that VIA Rail will continue serving our communities,” said Bruce Pugh, mayor of the Town of Wainwright. “This service is relied upon by residents, military families, businesses and visitors, and remains an important connection to destinations across Canada. We appreciate VIA Rail’s commitment to the region and look forward to its continued presence for years to come.”

The decision means VIA Rail’s Canadian will continue operating through Wainwright on its current route, while communities that supported the Prairie North proposal, including Lloydminster, will remain without passenger rail service.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
