Running for Shelter returns to Lloydminster Sept. 27 with $50,000 fundraising goal

The Lloydminster Men’s Shelter invites you to lace up your running shoes and support a local cause as the third annual Running for Shelter event approaches.

Set for Sunday, Sept. 27 at Bud Miller Park, the event aims to bring together runners, walkers, families, businesses and community members while raising awareness and funds to support those experiencing homelessness.

This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000, with proceeds supporting expanded shelter services and transitional housing initiatives in Lloydminster.

Third year

Now in its third year, Running for Shelter has grown beyond a simple 5K run. Organizers say the event is designed to build community connections while supporting practical solutions for people facing housing instability.

Service expansion and transitional housing

Funds raised will help support the Lloydminster Men’s Shelter’s efforts to expand services and develop transitional housing opportunities. The goal is to help people transition from emergency shelter into stable housing and greater independence.

“Running for Shelter is about forward movement,” said Michael with the Lloydminster Men’s Shelter. “It’s about moving people from crisis toward stability, but it’s also about our community moving forward together. We want people to come out, have a good time, learn more about the work being done and be part of something that can make a real difference here at home.”

Join the celebration

Participants can run or walk the 5K course, join a fundraising team or collect pledges from friends, family members and co-workers. The event will also feature a full afternoon of activities following the run, including a barbecue, live music, local vendors, sponsor booths, children’s activities, wellness experiences and other family-friendly entertainment.

Organizers are also encouraging participants to create personal fundraising pages and invite others to support their efforts. Businesses, community groups and families are invited to form teams and take part in a friendly fundraising challenge.

“We want this to be an event people look forward to,” said Allan Bartolcic, CEO of the Lloydminster Social Action Coalition Society. “There is an important conversation happening in our community about homelessness and housing, and this is an opportunity to bring people together in a positive way. Every registration, every fundraiser and every person who comes out to support the event helps us continue working toward longer-term solutions.”

Residents still have time to register, create a team, become a sponsor, sign up as a vendor or volunteer for the event.

Registration and event information are available through online at Running for Shelter 2026.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
