City proclaims Sexual Assault Awareness Week

Lloydminster is recognizing the importance of sexual assault awareness and prevention in the community.

On Friday, Mayor Gerald Aalbers and the Sexual Assault Centre signed a proclamation claiming May 21 to 25 as Sexual Assault Awareness Week. Public Education Coordinator for the Centre Carly Pollard says the proclamation helps raise awareness of the services they offer for sexual assault survivors in the City.

“It is a human issue not a gender issue and that is a huge message and that’s something we want the community to understand and continue supporting.”

The centre provides training, counselling, support and outreach services to survivors in and around the Lloydminster area.

Sexual Assault Awareness week kicked off last Friday with the Defensive Back Coach for the Calgary Stampeders Joshua Bell coming to the City and collaborating with the centre to enhance their boys programming.

“He went out to four of our Lloydminster schools doing presentations on boys self esteem, anger management, conflict resolution and hopes and dreams and was extremely inspiring to the boys in our community.”

The centre will look to continue to collaborate with Bell to develop their boys programming.
