Lloydminster youth programs to celebrate Black History Month

The focus is on youth, say Lloydminster activity organizers for Black History Month.

The theme of the cross-Canada observance is “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build.”

Several school presentations are planned including one at Lloydminster Comprehensive on Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 9:30 a.m. Mayor Gerald Aalbers will be among the guests, and lecturer Ben Acquaye will speak on the theme.

School administrators have asked also that the interactive sessions cover racism, the N-word, and the Black-lived experience.

The events at various schools during February are being held in partnership with the City of Lloydminster, Catholic Social Services, Lloydminster Local Immigration Partnership, Lloydminster Public and Catholic School Divisions.

The federal government, on its website notes the theme of Black Excellence aligns with the 10th year of the International Decade for People of African heritage and recognizes the need to promote and protect their human rights.
