Carbon tax protesters plan Hwy 16 blockade

Local organizers for the Nation-Wide Protest Against the Carbon Tax plan to block the right lanes in both directions along Hwy 16 East near the old Tourism Booth outside Lloydminster from April 1.

With the next phase of the carbon tax adding about 17 cents to fuel, and the Alberta government removing its fuel subsidy of 13 cents, gas prices in Lloydminster could be about $176.9 per litre when families are returning from their Easter long weekend.

April 1 is the day that both measures take effect.

The blockade will go on for three days, say organizers, but with the end goal being to remove the carbon tax, the blockade could be extended further. A detour route will be set up heading south along the road to the Lloydminster Upgrader then turning onto 12 Street.

Protesters are also making allowances for emergency vehicles; however, they estimate a 10-minute delay during peak traffic periods along the highway.

Since the area falls within the Maidstone RCMP jurisdiction, MyLloydminsterNow has reached out to them for further comment.
