Fire ban in effect in Mervin

A full fire ban is in place for the RM of Mervin, effective April 8.

All open fires are banned due to the very dry conditions and low humidity. The ban continues until such time that conditions improve, and the R.M. Council determines the ban can be lifted.

A fire ban includes fireworks, burning barrels, smudge, recreational fires, and propane fire pits with an open flame higher than 2 inches.

The RM says that when fire burns out of control in the area, extra demand is placed on staff and volunteer firefighters, creating large costs. The municipality will “aggressively pursue recovery from individuals who light fires during a ban.”

Still permitted are:

  • Barbecues (propane, gas, briquette & wood pellets)
  • Tabletop Propane heaters and propane heaters with a maximum flame height of 2 inches
  • Patio Heaters
  • Completely enclosed wood pellet-fuelled fire pits
