Vermilion RCMP seize drugs after roadside stop

Two travellers who police say were pulled over for littering are now facing illicit drug charges in Vermilion.

On April 7, at about 6:00 p.m., Vermilion RCMP stopped a vehicle on Highway 16 in the County of Minburn, after officers said that litter had been thrown from it.

Investigators determined that the driver of the vehicle did not possess a driver’s licence and drugs were seen in the vehicle, which led to the arrest of both occupants. Officers searched the vehicle and found more drugs, including over 500 grams of cocaine.

Penny McCoy, 38-years of Lloydminster, was charged with:

  • Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of crack cocaine
  • Possession of methamphetamine

Kevin Kahmahkotayo, 28-years of North Battleford was charged with:

  • Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of crack cocaine
  • Possession of methamphetamine
  • Failure to hold a valid operating licence.

Both suspects were held for judicial interim release hearings and released from custody.

McCoy’s next court date is April 22, while Kahmahkotayo is set to return to court on May 6. Both cases are at Alberta Court of Justice in Vermilion.
