Lloydminster Liners U17A win silver at Provincials, qualify for Nationals

The Lloydminster Liners U17A softball team is heading to nationals after capturing a silver medal at the U17A Provincial Championships in St. Albert.

Head coach Shane Hannon said the team’s second-place finish is a testament to the hard work, resilience and commitment shown by the players throughout the season.

“This group battled all weekend and never quit,” said Hannon. “They competed with some of the best teams in the province and earned the opportunity to represent Lloydminster on the national stage.”

The silver-medal performance secured the Liners a berth at the 2026 U17A National Championships, set for July 28 to Aug. 2 in Calgary.

The team barely got time to celebrate as immediately following the silver win, they headed to Surrey, B.C., where they are competing in the prestigious Canada Cup against top teams from across North America.

Hannon credited the athletes, families, volunteers and supporters who have helped make the season a success.

“Qualifying for nationals is a huge accomplishment,” he said. “It reflects the dedication of our players and the support they receive from their families, coaches, sponsors and the entire community.”

The Liners will now turn their attention to Calgary, where they will look to build on their provincial success and proudly represent Lloydminster at the national championship.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
