Highway 41 near Elk Point to close for month-long repairs following landslide

Highway 41 north of Elk Point will be closed for approximately four weeks beginning Tuesday, Sep. 1 as crews repair a section of roadway damaged by a previous landslide.

Alberta Transportation says the closure affects Highway 41 about 1.5 kilometres north of Highway 29. Crews will build a bypass and repair the collapsed portion of roadway during the closure.

The highway is scheduled to remain closed through September 30. Before the full closure takes effect, motorists can expect one-lane alternating traffic, reduced speeds, delays and width restrictions through the construction zone. Oversized loads are prohibited.

Traffic will be detoured using Highway 29, Highway 881 and Highway 28.

Police patrols

With the detour expected to increase traffic volumes on surrounding roads, the Elk Point RCMP and St. Paul Traffic Services will conduct enhanced patrols throughout the closure period. The additional enforcement will focus on ensuring industrial traffic is properly authorized to use routes through the County of St. Paul.

“We want the public to understand that we will be ensuring safety and enforcement on the detour routes,” said Sgt. Mike Dunsmore, Acting Detachment Commander of the Elk Point RCMP. “We want the public to understand that the safety of those roads, as well as the workers on Highway 41, remain the main goal regarding this initiative.”

Motorists are being advised to plan ahead, expect delays, and use caution while travelling through the area during the month-long repair project.
