Both the women’s shelter and the sexual assault centre in the Border City are getting a financial boost from the federal government. The Lloydminster Interval Home and the Lloydminster Sexual Assault & Information Centre were chosen to receive part of a $40 million fund to help support vulnerable people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fund was announced in early April and the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development confirmed over the weekend the money has since gone out to non-profits across Canada.
“Organizations that provide a safe place for survivors of violence are open and ready to provide support and we are deeply grateful for their tireless work at this challenging time. The quick flow of these emergency funds will help ensure that these organizations have the resources they need to continue their life saving work,” says Minister Maryam Monsef.
About 420 shelters and 89 sexual assault organizations in Canada have received funding. Indigenous Services Canada is also distributing $10 million to its network of 46 shelters on First Nations reserves and in the Yukon.
