Unemployment climbs on both sides of the border

The unemployment rate continues to climb in the Lloydminster region due to the COVID-19 pandemic according to Statistics Canada.

The rate in the Camrose-Drumheller area which includes Lloydminster is 10.4 per cent for the month of May. That is up from last month’s 9.3 per cent. The rate for the entirety of Alberta is 15.5 per cent which is up from 13.4 per cent. It is the second highest unemployment rate in the country.

In the Prince Albert and Northern region, the rate is 9.4 per cent, up from 7.2 per cent in April. It is the second lowest in the province as the Yorkton – Melville region had an unemployment rate of 9 per cent. The rate for the province of Saskatchewan went up a point to 12.5 per cent.

The overall unemployment rate in Canada is 13.7 per cent, the highest it’s been since 1982.
